'yin.' 2021 - 6" x 8.5" Handmade Hardcover zine, Edition of 10 (3 copies available)
Matter and void, or existence and non-existence, are the base binary of our physical reality. Matter is known because there is Void, and Void is known only because there is Matter. This duality expresses itself at every level of the universe. In Daoist cosmology, Yin and Yang give symbolic description to this fundamental truth.
Yang; the dynamic and transforming aspect of phenomena, dissolves and reorients existing structures through direct and conscious action.
Yin then; the receptive, supple, dark, interior force of reflection and just being (as opposed to doing). These energies work constantly and inseparably together in cycles throughout time.
On the human scale, we recognize these energies at play in our collective organization. Particularly in our urban environs, we can observe the effects of an artificially extended cycle of Yang energy expressed in the current climate crisis. Heedless growth, development, and exploitation of resources in the selfish pursuit of wealth and dominance of the landscape’s resources has forced the planet onto a trajectory of rapid destabilization of natural processes which will have unknown ramifications for life on Earth for centuries to come.
This project is a photographic inquiry into, and observation of, the current state of an urban environment through the Yin; a utilization of reflection and receptiveness to observe the excesses of Yang which have created these dense centers of human dominance over a once balanced and harmonious ecosystem. It is a recording and a questioning of the limits of natural balance and artificial excesses.
